Today was my last day at The Denver Post, after 5.5 years. I found out I was getting laid off while on assignment. I couldn’t cry, you can’t get masks wet and it’s dangerous to touch your face during this pandemic. Since then I’ve been going through a lot of emotions. I’m sad. I really loved my job. Going out into our community and telling your stories , on your best days and your hardest always inspired me. I’m angry. Journalism is important and unlike other industries who are experiencing layoffs, it’s highly unlikely that Alden Global Capital, who owns the paper and many others, will reinvest in its papers. I’m frustrated. It’s the middle of one of the most significant news events of our lifetime. I have so many leads/ideas and now those stories won’t get told. I’m grateful. Even though I lost my job I still have a pretty good life. And it seems small when you look at what others are losing to COVID-19. To those who have lost their jobs with no safety nets, to those who have lost loved ones, to those who are fighting for their lives now and to those on the front lines trying to save them, my heat goes out to you. I’m hopeful. We’ll get through this together. The amount of support and love I’ve felt this past week is more then I can say. All that to say, if you believe local journalism is important, now is the time to support them. The layoffs (and now furloughs) aren’t because our page views were down. My colleagues are doing outstanding work and telling important, necessary news stories.
